- Trauma
The vast
majority of individuals in the United States have experienced
at least one event that was extremely distressing or traumatic.
Current adult lifetime estimates for having experienced a serious
traumatic event range from 68.1% to 89.6% depending on the instruments
used to help recall. For some, these traumas leave lasting scars
and produce a variety of disruptive emotional, behavioral, and
somatic symptoms; a reduced sense of connection to others; and/or
a lost sense of meaning or safety in the world. Post-traumatic
anxiety, depression, and panic are common after single traumatic
events such as assault, rape, or disaster. Social isolation,
dissociation, low self confidence, substance abuse and personality
change can occur after long-term traumas such as sexual abuse,
partner violence, political oppression, or captivity. Drs. Deluty
and McDuff can provide specialty evaluation and treatment services
for all trauma-related disorders.
