David R. McDuff, M.D.

Sports Psychiatry

Dr. David McDuff is a nationally recognized addiction, trauma, and sports psychiatrist and a retired United States Army Colonel. He holds faculty appointments at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore as a Clinical Professor and at the Uniformed Services University in Bethesda as an Adjunct Associate Professor. Dr. McDuff is the founder of the University of Maryland’s Division of Alcohol and Drug Abuse, as well as its Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship and Sports Psychiatry Programs. He has been selected three times by Baltimore Magazine as a Top Doctor in Addiction Psychiatry.

Dr. McDuff remains actively engaged as a clinician, educator, speaker, and writer. He has delivered more than 100 lectures at national and international conferences and has authored over 60 journal articles, book chapters, reviews, manuals, and monographs. He is the author of the highly regarded book Sports Psychiatry: Strategies for Life Balance and Peak Performance, published by the American Psychiatric Press.

Widely regarded as one of the nation’s leading sports psychiatrists, Dr. McDuff has served as the team psychiatrist and mental skills trainer for the Baltimore Orioles since 1996 and for the Baltimore Ravens from 1996 to 2003. He also served as the Performance Medicine Physician for the Indianapolis Colts from 2015 to 2018.
